Research expertise

My initial research, which I began in 1995, concerned the comparative analysis of democratization processes and institutions in sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, I was trying to explain the different paths taken by countries attempting democratic transformation. The legal rules, political institutions and stakeholders appeared to be the main explanatory variables. At the same time, I developed a dual interest in the theorization of the role of institutions in politics and the use of the comparative method in political science. Since 2007, I have been interested in a second research theme: the growing power of China and its impact on the world order in general. In particular I have been analyzing Sino-African relations. Unlike the pessimistic views or platitudes we often hear, I am trying to show, by means of a comparative study based on a representative sample of African countries, that the nature and type of impact by China in Africa varies according to a set of endogenous and exogenous factors.
