Research expertise

My research in recent years is part of a wider observation of the phenomenon of lobbying. It centres on analyzing intellectuals, in other words players who, based on their reputations as producers of signs and symbols, intervene in the public debate on behalf of the public interest. My focus is more specifically on the social and political conditions that apparently make access easier in some societies, such as France, than in others, such as England. I use a historical political sociological approach to identify the cultural and structural factors that might explain this difference, it being understood that appearances can sometimes be deceiving: the influence may be exercised through more discreet and effective networks than the mass media lead us to believe. Accordingly, my analysis looks at this reality as expressed in the two societies starting in the 18th century, when the secularization process was well underway.
